CHAPTER 17

Harlow took a deep breath before crossing the threshold.

The little theatre June had hired for the recording was a community theatre with good acoustics and old red curtains framing the stage. It screamed high school production: nostalgic and melancholic.

Harlow released her clammy hands as her heart hammered in her chest like it was about to break her rib cage.

She hadn’t voluntarily put herself in front of a camera in a long time.. ever since the infamous interview at Good Afternoon America where Lisette Armstrong had asked her about her personal life and Harlow had rambled on about an imaginary Jack and his big dick.

Alex had almost bitten her head off on that occasion too.

“So what do you think?” June popped into view with a concerned expression on her face. “You don’t like it?”

They hadn’t texted or talked since the night at her house. It had been an unspoken agreement to forget about it or pretend it wasn’t happening. The only communication they’d had was when Harlow had sent the new track to the office, asking her if she could use it as her album’s main song.

June had emailed her back to confirm it was alright.

Harlow’s phone had been quiet for days.

“I think I forgot how to breath.” Harlow let out.

“It’s ok, you don’t have to do this, you know that, right?”

Harlow snapped her attention back to her favourite pair of chocolate eyes. “What?”

“Well, we can always just pack up and leave. Reschedule. Reorganise. Or you can just tell Alex you’re done.”

Harlow stared at her with raised eyebrows.

“Fine, that last one isn’t really an option anymore.” June smiled.

How was she so relaxed? Didn’t she realise her career was on the line? That if Harlow screwed it up yet again, she was going under? Because that was all Harlow could think about. “I think you are overestimating my skills here.”

“And I think you’ve forgotten how useful muscle memory is. Once the lights are on and you’re in front of that microphone, it will all come to you. You’ve done this so many times before. I’ve booked the theatre for the full day so you have plenty of time to settle into it.”

Harlow looked around. Despite the flurry of activity, the crew seemed small. There couldn’t have been more than ten people working on setting up the lighting and sound. It was fairly empty all considered.

June took a step towards her and then seemed to reconsider. “You’re going to do great,” she said with doubtless conviction. “I just have a good feeling that this is going to be wonderful.”

For a second Harlow believed her.

She held on to this belief for dear life. Hell, if she was going to need it.

“Fine, how long do I have for makeup and hair and everything?”

“All the time in the world. I took the opportunity to book one of my favourite make up artists. I think you’re going to like her work. She’s very good at matching the level of make up with the personality. Personally, I think you’d look good barefaced but I know you like your eyeliner.
